SHLOMO HIMMEL

I AM PARTICIPATING IN Generosity New Jersey
IN SUPPORT OF Jewish Family Service of Central New Jersey
$418 RAISED
$200 GOAL
Dear Friends:

As you likely know, I am on the Board of Jewish Family Services. I do this because I firmly believe that this agency is an important one in our community: it helps children and families with counseling, anger management, and special needs; it supports caregivers and offers care to the homebound and to holocaust survivors; it helps seniors grow old in the comfort of their own homes.

On June 10, Jewish Family Service will be participating in a fundraising walk/run at Oak Ridge Park in Clark. As with all walks like these, the goal is to encourage others to join us in contributing to the agency that we feel so strongly about.

Why do I feel so strongly? Because we are helping real people with very real needs. This year, for example, I’m proud to say that JFS has completely renovated the unheated shed that was the food pantry, and now we can not only provide regular food packages, but we can also let our clients “shop” among our offerings for what they prefer. People of all faiths and speaking all languages line up for the opportunity. We begin a distribution day with shelves fully loaded, and they are bare at the end! And no matter how often we expand the program, hungry people keep calling, and we still have a waiting list of individuals and families without enough food.

JFS also is struggling to hire enough home health care aides to keep up with the increasing needs of the holocaust survivors and other frail elderly who need help in order to stay safely in their own homes as they age and decline. We look to hire experienced aides, but we are also equipped to enroll job-seekers in our training program to become certified home health aides. In that way, not only do we serve the elderly, but we also provide job training that leads to skilled employment for unemployed people in our community. Everyone wins!

Some of us have had parents who could afford the home care upon which they relied in the last years of their lives, so they were able to stay in their own homes and remain relatively independent. But others are not as fortunate, and they rely on JFS. Which means that they rely on all of us.

These are the reasons that I give my time and money to JFS. Real people, real needs.
